Discussion Paper No. 04/97 THE GENDER PAY GAP IN RUSSIA DURING THE TRANSITION

چکیده

This paper attempts to explore the link between rising wage dispersion in Russia over the transitional period and the gender pay gap. The work of Blau and Khan (1996) emphasizes a role for ‘wage structure’ in the determination of the gender pay gap although some interpretational issues concerning their methodology have been raised recently by Suen (1997). The analysis presented here identifies increased wage dispersion as an agent for the widening of the gender pay gap in Russia, but the observed gap itself was seen to exhibit some degree of stability over the four year period covered. A tentative conclusion offered is that the transitional process has been approximately neutral towards the average Russian woman in terms of her relative pay position. The Gender Pay Gap in the Transition from Communism: Some Empirical Evidence

This short paper investigates the path through the 1990s of the gender pay gap in a number of former communist countries of Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union. Most of the gender pay gap is ascribed to the ‘unexplained’ component using con...

The Oaxaca/Blinder decomposition shows that the gender pay gap in the gross monthly salary can h...

Understanding the Gender Pay Gap: What’s Competition Got to Do with It?

A number of papers have recently argued that men and women have different attitudes and behavioural responses to competition. Laboratory experiments suggest that these gender differences are very large but it is important to be able to map these findings into real world differences. In this paper, we use performance pay as an indicator of competition in the workplace and compare the gender gap ...
